Helene is expected to cause dangerous mudslides and flooding in Cuba before the storm moves later in the week and strengthens into a major hurricane that may make landfall on Florida. AccuWeather.com is asking the National Hurricane Center of the United States National Weather Service for a Hurricane Warning stating
that Helene may grow to a major hurricane by Thursday with dangerous storm surge and flooding rain. Now about 180 miles (277 km) south of Cuba’s western tip, Helene is moving northwest at 14 mph (22 kph) with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph), NHC reported on its website. Meteorologists said the storm could intensify further within the Gulf of Mexico, which could turn it into a hurricane with wind speed of 115 miles per hour. In Florida, people have been advised to prepare themselves for extreme given high winds and the possibility of a disastrous storm surge, which might lead to ‘catastrophic flooding of the mostly low-lying coastal areas’ in the panhandle and west coast.
These effects may emerge as soon as Wednesday, leading to Governor Ron DeSantis to issue a state of emergency in nearly all Floridia counties. Certain regions are already on states of forced evacuation as threatened with grave coastal inundation.
